Maker Faire in NYC - my day there on Sunday Sept 26th
I offered 4 hours of voluntary work in the morning and found myself in the Maker Shed helping people to learn to solder. Each person bought a flashing LED badge kit for $1 and signed an indemnity form. It started out pretty slow but picked up after 10am. Everyone's face beamed with a smile after the LED started flashing. I had to keep stressing to children which part of the iron was hot and the part where they hold the iron. After 4 hours I wanted to keep going but I knew there was a lot to see and do in the remaining 5 hours.
The most impressive events for me were the learn to solder event I participated in, the MakerBots and RepRaps, the Madagascar Institute Jet Ponies (very noisy and primal feeling) http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=xuOJhEHM3DQ, seeing Massimo Banzi talk about Arduinos, and Gerard's vegan Paella. I was also interested in the video demo of Smooth-On www.smooth-on.com mold making and casting.
